NZ Casino Under Threat of Being Shut Down
A casino in New Zealand is at risk of being shut down as authorities threaten to suspend it's license for failing to enforce a halt to the gambling activities of one of its patrons, who had stolen to fund her gambling addiction.
The Dunedin Casino is at risk of being shut down by the government for six months following provisions in the 2004 Gambling Act, which states that casino operators must identify and exclude problem gamblers.
Christine Keenan, a 45-year-old woman has lost NZ$6.6 million on gaming machines in three years. At one time, she single handedly contributed 10 percent to the casinos's annual profit.
The woman has sold her house and spent her marriage settlement and inheritance to fuel her addiction. Moreover, she started stealing from her employers to be able to continue her gambling, leading to her being jailed for three years in Dec. 2004.
It appears that the casino regularly gave her as much food and alcohol as she wanted and had once drank out a particular brand of wine in the casino.
The Ministry of Health in New Zealand said only 12 percent of problem gamblers had accessed specialist services that helped alleviate their addiction.
"This leaves a huge group in society who have a gambling problem but either have not yet acknowledged it or don't know what to do about it," spokesperson Shayne Nahu said.
